Steven Peregrina

Can you see me?

Potential, I’ve always had too much of it,

unrealized,

unexpected,

unaccomplished.

Too poor to dream, too rich for healthcare,

I am a burden,

I am a leech,

I am undeserving.

Work harder, be better, you, you, you, it’s all up to you!

Paycheck to paycheck,

 and still not enough,

displaced and tired,

will it ever be enough, will I ever be enough?

I am smart,

so smart,

 too smart?

I enter the ivy hallowed halls of Columbia,

seize the opportunities,

make a difference,

here is your chance!,

Why me? I am no better than you?

Luck,

chance,

mistake,

I’ve taken someone else’s place.

The way I talk,

the way I move,

the way I write,

I am the usurper.
